The one I had my fingerprints done on a week ago had a glass surface that was edge lighted so that touching it changed the reflective qualities, a front surface mirror so the unit was flat (reflecting the image back instead of down in an upright unit) and a camera for imaging. I can imaging a much smaller and cheaper device - like for keyboard finger print scanning that would use fine capacitive elements.
